Making occupied homes safe for essential refurbishment

SN Clean prepared challenging kitchen and bathroom areas for a public-sector housing improvement project—helping contractors begin essential work safely while treating residents and their belongings with dignity.

  • EnvironmentOccupied residential homes
  • OutcomeWork areas made accessible

The brief

A safe starting point for the builders

The kitchens and bathrooms were due to be replaced as part of a housing improvement programme. Before the building teams could begin, the work areas needed careful clearing and specialist cleaning.

These were occupied homes, not empty units. Some residents were living with significant health, mobility or mental-health challenges that made it difficult to move possessions or prepare rooms without practical support.

The challenge

More than a conventional deep clean

Heavy clutter, accumulated waste and deeply soiled surfaces restricted access around the areas scheduled for refurbishment. Contractors needed space to work, but the occupants’ possessions also had to be handled carefully.

In one home, the household could not manage the lifting and moving required. Our team therefore created access in stages: clearing and cleaning one area, moving belongings safely, cleaning the newly exposed surfaces and returning items in an agreed order.

“A difficult property is still somebody’s home. The job is to solve the safety problem while protecting the resident’s dignity.”

That principle guided the team’s communication, pace and decisions throughout the work.

How we delivered

A controlled, practical process

01 · ASSESS

Plan access and priorities

We identified the rooms and surfaces the contractors needed, considered potential hygiene risks and planned a workable order of cleaning.

02 · PROTECT

Use appropriate PPE

The cleaning team worked in suitable protective equipment and followed a controlled approach for handling waste, soiled items and affected surfaces.

03 · CLEAR

Create safe working space

Loose items and waste were managed carefully to open routes and expose the kitchen and bathroom areas required for the refurbishment.

04 · CLEAN

Clean exposed areas

We cleaned the accessible surfaces and the hidden areas revealed as possessions and appliances were moved.

05 · RESTORE

Return essential belongings

Where residents could not manage this themselves, usable belongings were placed back carefully after the relevant area had been cleaned.

06 · HAND OVER

Prepare for the next trade

The priority areas were left accessible so the planned kitchen and bathroom improvement work could proceed.

Real project photographs

Before and after preparation gallery

These genuine photographs document the conditions encountered and the practical progress achieved before the refurbishment contractors entered. The objective was safe access and preparation for building work—not a cosmetic end-of-tenancy finish.

For resident privacy, photographs showing people, addresses, personal paperwork or other identifying details are excluded.

The result

Safer access, less delay and meaningful support

For the contractors

Priority kitchens and bathrooms were made accessible so refurbishment teams could approach the next phase with fewer avoidable hygiene obstacles.

For the residents

The work was adapted to the residents’ practical limitations, including hands-on support with possessions where it was genuinely needed.

For the project team

Specialist preparation reduced the gap between an occupied, high-need environment and the conditions required for planned improvement work.

What this project shows

Specialist cleaning is part of safe refurbishment planning

When a property contains heavy accumulation, restricted access or potential contamination, asking builders to begin without specialist preparation transfers a preventable risk to the next trade.

Early assessment and a compassionate cleaning plan can protect contractors, support vulnerable occupants and keep improvement programmes moving.
